Ha! the DoW I game balance made everyone totally different. Here's some of the real stuff straight from the Warhammer 40,000 novels, the TT and Codex (And wikipedia as usual).
Forces of the Imperium of Man
Space marines(Adeptus Astartes)
Warhammer's in house race, their brainchild. Space marines are picked out in their teens, they are people with exceptional fighting ability picked out by the various chapters to serve the Imperium of Man. They are supersoldiers, who are much better equipped than their Guardsmen friends. They wear power armour and use bolters, stuff that imperial Guardsmen can't use cos they are WEAK! (It is said that if A guardsman fires a bolter, his arm will fall off from the recoil)
It is believed that they consist of about 1000 chapters, and if all do follow the Astartes codex, they would have slightly more than 1million marines (Slightly more than 1003300 Marines to be almost exact). See how little marines it takes to fight and KILL? That's their power.
Usually, each Chapter is divided into 10 companies, each with 100 marines, a chaplain, an apothecary and a captain(or force commander). The first company consists of the Veterans, who become terminators and assume other veteran Roles. Companies 2-5 each have 6 10 men Tactical Squads, 2 10 men Assult Marine Squads and 2 10 men Devastator squads (these are heavy firepower squads. 4 men in the squad can exchange their bolters for a multi-melta , a heavy bolter, a plasma cannon [its cannon not pistol see the diff? {Compare to a fuel rod cannon in halo}], a Missile Launcher or a Lascannon.) Companies 6-9 are the reserve companies, where Companies 6 and 7 compose of totally Tactical Squads and Companies 8 and 9 consist of 10 10 men Assault Marine Squads and Devastator Squads Respectively. Chapter 10 Consists of only scouts, it is for the initiates who are too noob to join the other companies.
The Imperial Guard (and Navy)[/u]
The imperial Guard and Navy were once one adept, called the Imperial Army. The imperial Army consisted of Tens of Billions of Average Joe and Jane Human beings, armed with lasguns or laspistols and bayonets. They were later split into the Imperial Guard and Navy,Guard doing the Land fighting and the Navy doing the Space battles (The guard is in charge so long as they are on a planet). Though they are the main army of the Imperium's forces, they are only sometimes used in the front line to attack and invade (conquer) for the Imperium, as that is the job of the Adeptus Astartes. The Guard's main purpose was to hold the already conquered parts of the Imperium from invading forces. It was only until later, that when the Imperium got so fat the 1 million Space Marines were stretched and could no longer hog all the fighting (Even Super humans can't be selfish all the time) that the Guard was brought to the frontline.
As the Guard are normal humans, they are rather weak against their Space Marine Counterparts as well as the warriors of the Alien Races. They tend to drop quickly, and hence can be easily overpowered by their enemies. As a result, Guardsmen can only rely on their numbers and focused fire to defeat their enemies. Their cheapness facilitates this, and as many as a 1000 guardsmen can be fielded easily under their General(s).
Guardsmen also heavily rely on their tanks, mainly the leman russ battle tanks, commonly called the backbone of the guard. The Imperial Guard Vehicles give the men cover fire, allowing the guard to pull out more shots while not being shot at. These tanks allow the Guardsmen to be more effective in battle, and hence the Guard are a force to be reckoned with (though in the real story the Guardsmen can most probably be crushed by the marines).
Commisars (Like their Russian Counterparts) help keep the army in order, and their word is law (ha! the inquisition can do better), and they have the authority to execute anyone below the Rank of Lord Commander (That's the 3rd highest Rank in the Imperial Guard Heirachy. So why are they even fielded under a General?) Commisars also have good leadership potential, and could assume the role of the person whom they execute (Hmmm... I want to be a Lord Commander for a Day). Sadly, these Commisars are usually fielded with Guardsmen, so executions of High Ranking officials are not common (They are just being 'kind' [not for the guardsmen at least])
The Forces of Chaos!!!
The forces of chaos were formed when defeated (more like dead)Warmaster Horus' 9 traitor legions retreated into the eye of terror after the Horus Heresy and devoted themselves to the Chaos Gods. These Gods are Demanding and selfish, demanding absolute loyalty from their worshipers. If they are pleased with the worshiper, the worshiper will receive a Gift from his God. When the person is so loyal that he has a lot of Gifts, he eventually becomes a Powerful Daemon Prince if he is able to harness the full power of his Gifts. However, the gifts effectively turn the person to become almost a Daemon in his own right, and hence would be quite resistant to many usual weapons. However, Daemon effective weapons like Nemesis Force Weapons and Daemon Hammers are able to take out a Daemon with ease (If you play Warhammer 40,000 tabletop, A force commander with a Daemon Hammer takes 2 hits to kill a bloodthrister, the Greater Daemon of Khorne). There are many Chaos Gods, but there are four main ones and they are:
* Khorne - God of Hate, Rage, Blood, War and Killing
* Tzeentch - God of Change, Lies, Hope, Ambition, Manipulation, Scheming and Sorcery
* Nurgle - God of Decay, Despair, Destruction, and Disease
* Slaanesh - God of Decadence, Excess, Pain, Pleasure and Self Indulgence
The Forces of Chaos consist of mainly Chaos Space Marines who are Space Marines that turn to Chaos and the Lost and the d**ned who are Imperial Guardsmen that turn to Chaos. The Chaos Gods distrust each other and infighting is common, and also the fact that they that forces of each God will not fight in a war on the same side (see the falsity of Dawn of War? Khorne Berserkers follow, Khorne of chourse! and Horrors are daemons of Tzeentch.) This means that the Chaos forces would not reach their full potential until the end Scenario of the Warhammer story which I would Hide from you for now. Chaos also has stuff called Daemons, lesser representations of their Gods, with Greater Daemons being the ultimate manifestation of their God and Lesser Daemons being normal dudes which could mount steeds in battle (It might be good to know that the Vanquisher Leman Russ variant can banish a Greater Daemon back to the Warp in a single shot from another planet OOPS!)
