The things we learn in school, are they for our own good in the future or do we learn these stuff just to pass the exams?
For example, English. English can be used throughout our lives. But what about Maths? Learning basic Maths is a must, but is it necessary for us to learn Algebra? Will we have to use it in the future?

so if your boss writes: x(0)+1000/1000+(0)=>your pay this month, you will understand.

Well, basically, learning is what you want it to be. You learn it last min cram for grades, then obviously you're just studying for the sake of studying. Hardworking and revise all year round and retain that information obviously want to not be butt scratching idiots when they grow up.

Well noticed that we take general sciences, general maths and all at p.sch start but slowly narrow down to bio / phys / geog / hist / literature / a or e maths and all? It narrows down or scope of interest so eventually we know what job we want to be. if you want to be a doctor, you need to know biology. and so on.

What if we do not get a job related to teaching and science? Like maybe business? Need we learn algebra?

Business requires science. If not you wouldnt know how to answer when customers ask you about it. Math comes into play as you need to tabulate and all that. Algebra is not really required, but we're doing general maths here. not focusing on a person who wants to be an entrepeneur. I must say though. The guy who invented algebra was bo liao. infinite numbers le still want add 26 more.

lol but algebra's method of subsitution and its ability to put unknowns into equations to find out the unknowns plays a very important part of science and maths today. He was an arab btw. Algebra is amazing. Be a scientist of mathematician and understand its wonders (Unless you are better than Dheepa at C/ C++/ Java/ Assembly language just you try to work iwthout it)

But first, is it related to what you NEED to know? I mean if you want to be a businessman, then how is bio gonna help with that?

the reason why we study such diversified subjects is to actually let us see what we're interested and good at, for example, u might like Maths but if the school had make u focus on humanities instead, then isnt it jus such a waste, secondary school is where we start to think what we wanna do, and from there develop our skills such that we're ready for university and therefore life. However, sometimes i really wonder whether the school is teaching us for our lives or simply for exams. One example is the upcoming GCE 'O' level Chinese paper. they're makin us go for some intensive training. i feel the purpose of studyin chinese and other languages is simply so that we hav a means of conversation with people living in a different land. however, i feel how the teachers are treating this is as if we are studyin basically to pass the examination, not to help us in life but for the paper that we will get at the end

Next year boy. Oh yes, I forgot you guys are still subject to HCL and 2 year intensive Chinese O lvls which do nothing for you. And Chinese is leet. Why can't we pick our own foreign languages. I'd learn Malay or maybe some European language, but Chinese doesn't appeal to me. Other than that, Natnat is right, its to keep your options open. You can't decide at 6 if you want to be a Rocket Scientist. Your views would change as you get older, and you will make more sensible choices and not want to be a Soldier just cos you get to hold a gun (at that point in time you forget the horrible life, trench digging in some circumstances, etc etc.) @galvin Docs take Chem, not Bio
