Introduction
You’re probably thinking “OMG A WTF MODE GUIDE!?! WHO WÜD CARE ABOUT WINNING WTF MODE??//?/” Well, who wouldn’t want to win any game? It’s fun pwning people for once in wtf mode if you’re a total n00b and cry for your mommy after every single –ap match because your kill death score is 1-26, and you kill people only by KSing (Sounds like me ). In WTF mode, both old players and newbies have an equal chance of winning due to the major change of game mechanics. So read on for pure pwnage!
Firstly, WTF mode means all players in the match have instant mana regeneration and a negligible cooldown on all spells and items (it’s not NO cooldown, and all spells still have a mana cost. The description for wtf mode liez!). This means most heroes will be spamming spells all over the place trying to kill each other from the very start of the game to the end. However, in this guide, I will show that this is not the way to pwn wtf mode.
Game modes played with WTF mode/Note on Banned heroes
Usually, most WTF modes are played with –ardm because it’s more fun that way. No one plays it with –ap because everyone will get severe finger blisters by excessive clicking on the zeus, silencer and mercurial portraits at the start of the game (All 3 of them have global spells at lvl 6 FYI). Sometimes it’s played with –em too so it’ll be easier. But the more retarded ones play wtf mode with –arsh or –apsh, which is pure hell. 10 Pudges having a meat hook war is something you don’t want to see… Trust me.
I would like to stress at this point that there are heroes in wtf mode which are banned, meaning if you get one of these heroes you must commit suicide at the stated levels. It isn’t fun for other people when you cheat, so don’t use these heroes!
Banned Heroes include:
ZEUS AT LVL6 AND ABOVE
SILENCER AT LVL6 AND ABOVE
MERCURIAL AT LVL6 AND ABOVE
FURION AT LVL6 AND ABOVE
TINKER BANNED AT ALL LVLS
LORD OF AVERNUS BANNED AT ALL LVLS
Item Build
Most people go straight for a Dagon or maybe a Boots Of Travel, but in wtf mode, there are only two items you need which are…
......AND.......
ARCANE RING AND REFRESHER ORB
FTW OMGWTFBBQHAX! YES, WITH THESE TWO ITEMS, YOU HAVE INFINITE MANA AND NO COOLDOWN RATES!
Just joking. The first and most important item you should go for is the
HAND OF MIDAS
In all 1v1 matches, you can get a Hand Of Midas (HOM) at the start. However, most wtf matches are played with more than just 2 people. With a HOM, you can start throwing furry golden stuff that eat both neutral and enemy creeps like a vacuum cleaner. Imagine a Dagon which is 1k cheaper, kills any non-hero below lvl 6 and doubles/triples your gold income. You gain A LOT of money in a short amount of time, which makes you earn money for all your other items. Considering the fact that there’s no cooldown, you can spam it all over the place and walking creeps are like moving gold bars.
For the second item, you should buy a Linken's Sphere or a Dagger of Escape.
...............OR..............
LINKEN'S SPHERE...OR...KELEN''S DAGGER OF ESCAPE
These are both defensive items that will save your assets and time. The Linken Sphere has an instant cooldown rate, which means it gives total spell immunity against many, many spells such as Zeus’s Global Ultimate, and Roshan’s Evil Rock Throwing Stunny Spell Thingy. On the other hand, the dagger lets you manually dodge enemy attacks such as Centaur, Magnataur or Pandaren’s stomps, Leviathan’s AOE stun attack, impales and many other spells not resistable by Linken's Sphere. Of course this takes some skill. It also allows you to move quickly around for farming or switching lanes. I will demonstrate how to dodge with a dagger later.
So which item should you take first? Simple. If you’re AM, QOP, Faceless Void or PotM, take linken, if you’re not, take the dagger THEN linken.
The forth item is…
DAGON
By this time, you should be raking in the cash with your HOM. Dagon should be very easy to farm and it does decent damage even at lvl 1. Upgrade your dagon to lvl 5 ASAP as it allows you to kill most people in 3 hits. The Dagon can even go through the linken sphere! You should get this item even if you’re lion or lina because dagon is an item, which means the silencer can’t silence it out if he cheats with global silence.
Buy a Boots of Travel and Guinsoo for your last 2 items.
...............AND................
BOOTS OF TRAVEL...AND...GUINSOO'S SCYTHE OF VYSE
BOT allows you to move around the map faster if you need to jump lanes, shop or more importantly, defend your barracks. At end game, it is very easy to rax because everyone will be spamming spells to kill your creeps/barracks. The dagger is too slow to quickly jump to your base. If the opponent manages to rax, it would mean you have to make constant trips to that lane, leaving your other lanes vulnerable. Trust me when I say mega creeps are very hard to fend off, even with a HOM. The +90 runspeed bonus is useless because you have a dagger.
Guinsoo on the other hand works as a stun. Too bad it only works on people without a Linken Sphere. Your opponents will be like :“-WTF?! WHY IM I A FLYING SHEEP ZOM?” when you use The Sheepstick on them and start zapping them to death as they watch in agony. You may choose to replace this item with a Lothar if most of your opponents have a Linken Sphere because the SheepStick becomes totally obsolete that way.
So in summary, the items you should get are:
Gloves of Haste (610 gold)
Hands of Midas Recipe Scroll (1400 gold) = Hands of Midas (Total 2010 gold)
Kelen's Dagger of Escape (2150 gold)
Ultimate Orb (2300 gold)
Ring of Health + Void Stone = Perseverance (Total 1775 gold; Get Perseverance in 1 trip to save time)
Linken’s Sphere Recipe Scroll (1425 gold) = Linken’s Sphere (Total 5500 gold)
Staff of Wizardry (1000 gold)
Blades of Attack (650 gold)
Dagon Recipe Scrolls x5 (1350 x 5 = 6750 gold) = Dagon Lvl 5 (Total 8400 gold)
Boots of Speed (500 gold)
Boots of Travel Recipe Scroll (2200 gold) = Boots of Travel (Total 2700 gold)
Void Stone (900 gold)
Staff of Wizardry (1000 gold) + Robe of the Magi (450 gold) + Eul’s Scepter of Divinity Recipe Scroll (450 gold) = Eul’s Scepter of Divinity (Total 2800 gold; Finish Eul’s in one sitting due to lack of inventory space)
Quarterstaff (1150 gold) + Robe of the Magi (450 gold) + Sobi Mask (325 gold) = Oblivion Staff (Total 1925 gold) + Eul’s + Guinsoo’s Scythe of Vyse Recipe Scroll = Guinsoo’s Scythe of Vyse (Total 5175 gold; Finish Guinsoo’s in one sitting due to lack of inventory space)
SUBTOTAL : 2010+5500+2150+8400+2700+5175 = 25935 GOLD! NOW ISN’T THAT CHEAP?
Final build:
Notice the numbers on the activatable items? Those are your hotkeys on your numpad to quickly access your items. In WTF mode, reflexes are crucial in winning any 1 on 1 battle. You need to dodge attacks like Carrion Swarm, Nether Blast and Reverse Polarity. With a quick access to your items, not only can you dodge spells with ease, but you can also cast spells like dagonizer and sheepify to pwn them. I recommend arranging your items so that you won’t muddle up your commands. One such example is the picture above. Blink Dagger is the most important, so I put it in the center of the numpad (Number 5). Dagon is right below it (Number 2) so that I can blink, zap people and quickly blink away.
POSSIBLE MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
LOTHAR'S EDGE
Gives permanent invisibility. Do note that the slight pause when you’re re-casting Lothar after your 9 seconds of invisibility is up will give your position away for a very short time. The downside of using a Lothar is that you are still vulnerable to AOE spells like Ravage and Quill Spray.
CROW COURIER
PH34R T3H UBAHJ LEET HENCHMAN OF D00M!!!!!!11ELEVEN. Ever wondered what you should do to get rid of that pesky Faceless Void who keeps trapping you in that Chronosphere and slowly punches you to death as you watch in horror and start screaming for your mommy? Well, with a crow, you can turn the tables and freak the sheet out of him. Give him 3 Vitality Boosters, a Dagon and a Dagger and he’ll be a flying battle fortress in no time! Your opponents will be like:”WTF!! *FOAM*” You may also give him a Guinsoo or a HOM for extra farming purposes. Furthermore, he has spell immunity. What a coincidence. I have also just realized that the spell immunity is much better than you think. Giving him a Mekansm gives himself perma-heal as his spell immunity negates the Mekansm buff and therfore he can spam heal for himself only. - Thanks to )I(ce for the information!. The big disadvantage of having a crow is that he becomes a flying magical vault for your opponent and they will try their best to punch your crow to death to waste all your cash. It also costs a lot just for a furry bird.
POOLING
Once you’re done with your build, it is a gÜd idea to buy other things for your teammates so they can help you during team battles too.
In summary, you get a HoM for farming, Linken for spell immunity to all targeted spells, Blink Dagger for dodging all other spells, Dagon for hero-killing, BoT for protecting rax/ancient, Lothar for sneaking around/invisibility after casting a spell and a Mekansm/Nathrezim Buckler combo for support and protection during team battles.
ITEMS YOU DON’T WANNA GET
BLACK KING BAR
“WTF? NO BKB IN WTF MODE/!1? LOL U RR N00B ROFL!” It is true that the BKB counters many more spells than the Linken Sphere. It is also true that the BKB is also much cheaper than Linken Sphere as well. Then why not get a BKB you ask? The main reason is because after using a BKB twice in a row, there is a bug that sometimes causes you to be unable to give commands to your hero. This is very frustrating as this lasts very long and after testing this item, I got killed many times from the bug. So as long as this bug is not removed, BKB is a no-no item for WTF mode. Furthermore, as BKB has to be constantly activated, if you somehow forget to use in the forest, someone can just jump out of the forest like a gorilla and stun you with their spells.
A quote from Virot2:
QUOTE
...there is a nasty bug caused by BKB spamming. If you activate avatar (either via BKB or N'aix's Rage) while your hero is shrinking back to normal size after a previous avatar, then for the rest of the game any commands you give your hero will only be carried out after all earlier commands are completed. In effect, your hero will act like you are constantly holding down the shift button to add commands to the queue. So, be careful using BKB in -wtf mode!
+
MEKANSM AND NATHREZIM BUCKLER
Before 6.42 came out, the Mekansm-Buckler combo was almost unstoppable. It could give a AOE perma heal because the Mekansm buff could be overwritten by the Nathrezim Buckler buff and vice versa. But this OMGWTFBBQHAX method has been hit by IceFrog with a gigantic nerfstick of doom. Now the Mekansm buff can no longer be erased by the buckler, thus removing the evil AOE 250hp/sec heal.
BUT.....!!!!!!1
THE MEKANSM STILL WORKS WITH THE BKB!!!! WOOHOO!!!11ELEVEN!! After receiving a PM from tWiStEdArrOw, I realized that when the BKB is combined with the Mekansm, IT BECOMEZ UBAHJ CHEAT HAX BBQ LAWL! Activate your BKB and during your 10 seconds of spell immunity, you can shrug off the Mekansm buff and therefore have a self-only perma heal. However, even if you have a BKB + Mekansm combo, you should never neglect buying a Linken's Sphere because it shields you in between your Biggyful-BKB-activate-thingy.
With this BKB + Mekansm combo, your final build should be:
Hand of Midas
Blink Dagger
Linken's Sphere
Dagon
Black King Bar
Mekansm
I would like to stress that this build is not for people who are high on sugar because you cannot spam BKB or your hero will get epileptic fits and become uncontrolable!
Strategy
Early Game
The first few seconds of the game starts of with you crossing your fingers when the host types -ardm. If you get someone as crappy as Naix or Troll Warlord, then quickly run towards Roshan and start taunting him because you need someone who can actually cast a damaging spell at lvl 1, not someone who has 3 passive non ulti spells. Bone Clinkz is also someone you don’t want to get as a starting hero because his Searing Arrows are quite useless. The best kinds of hero you want to get are those with AOE spells so you can farm quickly. Your Hand Of Midas is very important so your main aim in early game is to farm like crazy.
Once you have your hero, learn an active, AOE damaging spell first, or the best spell for farming. Suicide immediately if your hero can’t farm well (I am assuming you are playing –ardm). Buy a glove of haste if you can and go and hug your lane’s tower. I suggest going middle and bottom lanes for Sentinel and top and middle lanes for Scourge because you will be nearer to the neutral creep sites this way.
One mistake I see lots of people do is to trying to pick a fight before the creeps spawn. They attempt to kill someone by going dangerously close to the enemy’s tower. This is risky because if you die while trying to kill someone, you will lose much of your needed gold as well as losing time for farming when you walk all the way back. You cannot afford to take this chance and get first blooded!
What a random pic... Anyway, wait until your creeps come then start spamming your spells to get as much gold as possible. Use hotkeys for spell spamming proficiency. Meanwhile, never risk your life to try and kill someone! If you manage to kill all enemy creeps fast enough, you may want to go neutraling and return immediately when the next wave of creeps arrive at your lane. Once you have enough cash for HOM, run back to base quickly and buy it.
This is when the game takes a turn. Not many people know that the best way to farm once you have your HOM is to go neutraling. Attempting to kill other heroes with no items other than a HOM is suicidal and is a very slow way to level up. Return to your lane once you bought a HOM, and start spamming your HOM instead of spells. Once all the creeps in that lane are exhausted, go to a nearby neutral camp and spam your HOM again. Beware of Granite Golems and Satyr Hellcallers because HOM doesn’t work on them. Then kill all neutral camps in that area until all of them are dead. Return to your lane and farm until the neutrals respawn.
Keep repeating this until you can afford your dagger. With your dagger, blink around instead of walking and repeat the above stated farming process until you get your Linkens AND Dagon. That’s right, you don’t hunt for heroes until you get a HOM, Dagger, Linkens and Dagon. By the time anyone in the match gets these four items, this is when I call it “Mid Game”.
***USEFUL TIPS*** Once you get the above 4 items, it is highly possible you can solo Roshan with any hero. Since it's WTF mode, Roshan will attempt to perma-stun you by throwing his rocks at you until you die. He's more aggresive than a fire-breathing moose so watch out! However, your Linken's Sphere TOTALLY negates his rocks so you can laugh away while you spam your Dagon at him and watch him stupidly throw his rocks against you. You should be able to walk away 800 gold richer and UNSCATHED since Roshan is really that stupid. Do this the moment you get your above 4 items for a nifty cash boost to your entire team!***USEFUL TIPS***
Just to let you know, here's a list of kreepz followed by the cash you get by using a HOM on them. Thanks to MrX for the information.

Mid Game
If you farmed well, mid game should be around the 20th minute and you should be at least lvl 11. Now this is when you start trying to kill people. In ardm, because there are 2 ways to win (Destroy Tree/Throne OR kill all available heroes), it may be a good idea to massacre everyone.
When you have acquired a target for killing, blink your way to the forests behind him. If you have a stun spell, gÜd 4 Ü! Blink out of the forest behind him when the time is right and alternate between your stun spells and Dagon if you have a stun. If you don’t have a stun, blink in, zap, blink out, repeat. Or you may choose to blink behind and zap him while dodging attacks.
This is when dodging comes in. When the opponent finds out you dodge spells like a raging ninja squirrel, they will be like:”-WTF MODE!” Dodging involves using a blink dagger to avoid attacks and spells. There are varying ways to dodge, depending on the spell being casted. Spells like Dagon involves you blinking backwards to get out of range, while linear spells like impale requires you to blink sideways. AOE spells are the toughest to dodge, so try to kill the caster ASAP. Of course, dodging spells like that are not easy, so you need a low ping and lightning quick reflexes (Which not many DotA players have ).
The following screenshots show how to dodge and anticipate spells.
1. I see tiny up ahead and I am clearly in his Avalanche range.

2. I anticipate his Avalanche spell and blink away, dodging it in time.

Notice I blink away to the side instead of blinking backwards, leaving me available to zap him with my Dagon the moment I blink away.
When someone jumps out of the forests like a gorilla…

2. He swamps me with his Black Hole spell. There is a slight pause before he re-casts his black hole again. See the green stuff spilling all around? It means that his Black Hole spell has expired and he needs to cast it again.

4. He attempts to blink next to me to cast his Black Hole again. The thing is that I have the upper hand because I know he will blink next to me to try to suck me again, so I target him with my Dagon the moment I blink away. This means the moment he blinks towards me, he gets in range with my Dagon and he gets zapped immediately. I zap him one more time and…
Reduced: 64% of original size [ 800 x 600 ] - Click to view full image
Some people give you lots of time to blink away before they pwn you. One such example is a Magnataur using Reverse Polarity. It has a wide stunning-sucking radius, but he takes so long to raise his stick and stomp the ground that I can easily dodge it.
1. ZOMG FOAM I SEE MAGNATAUR RAISING HIS PH34RED STICK OF DOOM!

2. I blink away from his sucking spell. He misses.
Reduced: 64% of original size [ 800 x 600 ] - Click to view full image
It is also possible to dodge melee attacks. In the case of AM where if he manages to burn enough of your mana, you’ll get scr00d because the mana he burns away won’t regenerate.
1. I see AM’s attack animation.

2. I FLEE LIKE A PANSY WOMAN!!!!!1

As you can see, the AM misses me with my blink. Dodging melee attacks are much tougher but it is worth it especially when AM tries to mana burn you.
Dodging encompasses moving to a strategic location to avoid spells while at the same time, putting you in a position to kill your opponent’s hero. If possible, try to blink to a spot that is still in range of your Dagon so the moment you blink away, you can zap him to death.
Identify the spells your enemies have so you know what to look out for. Stay out of stomping range for people who can stomp-stun you (e.g. Slithereen Guard, Pandaren Brewmaster, Centaur Warchief). Whereas for heroes who can cast AOE spells around themselves (e.g. Necrolyte, Crystal Maiden, Venomancer), try to stay out of their AOE range. It is also a good idea to anticipate spells. If you know that your opponent is going to cast a spell on you, blink away just in case.
If you act as an assassin and kill everyone, there will eventually come a time when all the heroes on the opposing team will start scheming and decide to push mid because they know they will exhaust all their heroes soon and therefore try to destroy your Ancient. This means it’s time for late game.
Useful tip: Double clicking on your dagger blinks you once towards your fountain. Spam the hotkey for blink dagger if you’re scr00d.
Late Game
The first signs of late game: 5 enemy heroes in the middle lane. It can happen anytime after mid game so be careful. Your Boots of Travel will be an invaluable item as you cannot afford to waste time slowly blinking to protect your barracks. Call your team to defend the lane and spam your ping on that lane too.
You may want to hide in the forests behind and wait for your opponents to push before you jump out like a spider monkey and maul them all to death. But if your enemy has a few troublesome AWEESOOOME pushing heroes, then it means serious business. Such heroes include Prophet, Warlock and Terrorblade. All 3 of them can spam summons to rax like crazy. The best bet against these people is to kill them all first.
Here's an example of Warlock Infernals trying to rax.
Reduced: 64% of original size [ 800 x 600 ] - Click to view full image
I suggest the one without any AOE spells to hunt for them and kill them all. Heroes with AOE spells should not have too much trouble warding off the summons by their own. But a push means 5v5, not just summons. Other heroes will try to r4pe your teammates as they protect your barracks. There should be a slugfest if your opposing team is g00d. A blink fight isn’t exactly pleasant, so a trick you may want to use is: Lothar, cast AOE spell, Lothar again. The further the range of your AOE spell, the more people you’ll hurt.
Eventually, one team will go down while the other team should be half dead. If you die, try to buy back ASAP because your tree/throne is easily destroyed in WTF mode after your opponents rax. If you manage to ward of the invasion, then blink ahead of all your creeps, and kill all the enemy creeps in that lane. You may want to blink to your enemy’s barracks and start chomping off their towers. This is called BACKDOORING and it IS allowed, the blink dagger just makes it easier.
Once your opponent manages to rax mid, they will usually try to make a mad rush for your ancient. Defend it at all costs or you will get PWNT! Your tree/throne won’t survive for more than 5 seconds with 15472 treants surrounding it or 632 terrorblade clones throwing green goop at it.
This concludes my strategy section.
*USEFUL TIPS* Roshan too easy? Bored from wtf mode because Roshan always dies at the 15th minute and there aren’t any more bosses that requires an entire team to take down? Well fret no more! A recent discovery by P_a_W showed that there is a ludicrously difficult boss in the dota map that can only be destroyed in wtf mode. No, this isn’t some fraud, it’s… THE FOUNTAIN! That’s right! The Fountain Of Life/Defiled Fountain Of Life makes an excellent Roshan-like boss! It does about 800 dmg per second (Correct me if I’m wrong) and has 50000 health compared to Roshan’s pansy 200 dmg per second and 13500 health. What makes it really difficult is that all your opponents will attempt to rip your team to shreds while you begin to scratch the fountain. They spawn right into the fighting grounds if they die and will buy back if they can (assuming it’s not –ardm). Your team of 5 needs a healer (someone with the Mekansm-Buckler Combo) and also a tanker (a hero with ludicrous amounts of health, he must be the first to get attacked by the fountain) to take down The Uber Roshan. The benefits? Your opponents can’t heal AANNNDD… They have nowhere to run to seek protection. Isn’t that fun? I have a replay of me cheating and tearing down a Defiled Fountain Of Life if you don’t believe me. *USEFUL TIPS*
Sorry I could'nt get the pictures. they are really funny and some of them essential to reading the guide.

Some people give you lots of time to blink away before they pwn you. One such example is a Magnataur using Reverse Polarity. It has a wide stunning-sucking radius, but he takes so long to raise his stick and stomp the ground that I can easily dodge it.

2. I blink away from his sucking spell. He misses.

It is also possible to dodge melee attacks. In the case of AM where if he manages to burn enough of your mana, you’ll get scr00d because the mana he burns away won’t regenerate.
